My trials and tribulations of learning to drive, to passing my test and beyond!

30 1/2 Hours.

Well we managed an hour and a half lesson today and boy was I glad! It took me a little while to get back into the swing of things after my week off. I made silly mistakes that I've never made before and everything, it was rather frustrating to say the least! My instructor decided to go through a test sheet as we were driving along and was making notes on things I wasn't doing quite right. It might be a bit jumbled though because it was 8 hours ago that I went out!

At some point we ended up at the roundabout by the new multi storey car park and were turning right onto John Street. Now we were already on the roundabout and there were cars to our left which had to give way to us. Except one woman DIDN'T and had I not braked, we would have ran into the side of her and she was totally oblivious to it all! She was far too busy looking at the multi storey and didn't see me either on the roundabout OR as we nearly ploughed into the side of her!! I know she didn't see me because I had my eyes on her at all times due to her complete lack of common sense or sense of her surroundings!

We headed down John Street and got to the other side of the stop junction and attempted that twice. The first time I hit the kerb with my back wheel and I've NEVER done that there so I was very annoyed with myself! We headed back round via Kwik Fit roundabout and tried again. This time was ok, though I took it a bit wide and got a little too close to the car coming the other way.

First off we headed for the test centre (which was closed) and did a turn in the road on Stanley Street. Perfect might I add! Then we headed off to do a parallel park. I'm sure my instructor found the busiest road he could, though to be fair, all of the roads were pretty busy. It was Saturday dinner time after all!

I messed up the parallel park on the first attempt and almost hit the kerb, so I moved out and tried again. This time I managed ok and didn't get too close to the kerb for a change! Now this manouvre must've taken about 10 minutes to do because of all the cars passing and people walking around me so I was getting frustrated by this point!

Now here's where it becomes a bit hazy with what was next, but I remember heading up towards Moorclose, then down Moorclose Road towards Harrington and I overshot the give way at the bottom, then nearly clipped the kerb turning out! D'oh! We decided to give it another go so headed up the hill to Lillyhall.

So then we went right up to the roundabout and came down the hill towards Westlands Hotel. We went through Castle Gardens and I went into 3rd gear too soon so the car started shouting at me! sad.gif Then I tried to get round the corner onto Newlands Lane and kinda coasted round with my foot down on the clutch and I'd done so well with the clutch up to that point! We headed down towards the sports centre and tried the give way at the bottom of Moorclose Road again. This time I didn't overshoot the junction and didn't almost clip the corner so I was away again. Oh, before the 2nd attempt, I did an emergency stop just before the roundabout and I managed that no bother, but I did forget to check my blind spot on the left before moving off again.

We headed back up into Harrington again and cut off along Scaw Road to get back to Castle Gardens. Now as we were coming off Scaw Road at the other end (can't remember the name of the road you go onto!) I remember being able to get out of the junction straight away because there was only one car on the road and it was miles away, but as I was getting my speed up, bearing in mind I was now up to 40, the car that turned out behind me overtook us!! We hadn't got that far passed the junction so I don't know what the hell he thought I was going to do! Flaming idiot!! Just after he got passed me he had to slow down rapidly too because there were loads of cars, so he didn't get anywhere any faster anyway! God, I hate drivers like that.

This time we got round Castle Gardens in 4th, AND we got onto Newlands Lane in 2nd gear without coasting on the clutch! I think the first time I hadn't slowed down fast enough so that kinda threw me and I forgot to release it... That's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it!

Anyway, we headed onto Hawkshead Avenue and EVENTUALLY did a reverse round a corner, once the road was clear of cars and pedestrians long enough for me to get round! That was rather excellent too, even if I do say so myself. cool.gif

At this point we headed onto Banklands and attempted a hill start on Eldred Road, which people from Workington will know is an EXTREMELY steep hill! The first attempt was a TOTAL mess and I ended up rolling back down because I didn't quite have the bite so we tried again, and then again slightly further up the hill. The other 2 attempts were ok, but I must admit to having done them better before.

We headed back round onto Banklands and I eventually did a parallel park when the 2 idiots with the rugby ball finally got out of the way. I can't even blame their stupidity and ignorance on their age because I recognised one of the and he's definitely over 18!! Just trying to be clever and definitely not being.

So we headed off again and took a right onto Mason Street. I was so, so glad when my instructor said take a right because I had a really bad feeling that he was going to say left and take me up yet another hill that I really hate! Every time we go up, I swear that I would NEVER live there, even if it was the last available house on Earth! That's how much I really do detest it! When I said that he was gutted because he was trying to find something that I didn't like to see how I got on. Hehehehe! We did the stop junction by Co-op instead, and I managed ok, though I do have a tendency of getting rather close to the kerb as I'm straightening up after turning left!

By this time my lesson was almost over so we headed home, but went passed the junction so had to take the next one which was a tiny lane! I thought he was going to get me to carry on to the next proper junction, but nope, the lane it was! Hhmmm... bit of a tight squeeze, but we got round anyway!

We headed back towards my house and my instructor reached for the brake as I was coming to a stop over the road but I had it under control and told him so! Hehehehe!

Next week it's going to be more of the same, going along test routes and trying to fit everything in. The only thing we didn't do today was a bay park, but I refuse to do them anywhere except the test centre because I'll just get confused! Hopefully that will be something we can do next week, but it depends if it's open!
