Mobiles - Are They Really Worth The Hassle?
These days the mobile phone is a necessity for many people, me included, except when hubby phones to bug me if when he's bored at work. It's at times like this that I wish I DIDN'T have one, especially if I'm getting ready for work or something!
Anyway, to get back on track. I topped up my mobile on Monday morning after discovering that I had no credit left and put £10 on it. Later that day, I received a text message from some site that left the number 60044 as the caller. Thinking that it'd stop, I simply blocked the number and deleted the message. I later received 2 more that didn't leave a number, they left names Meicieq me and Marge! Now after receiving all 3 of these messages I found that I'd lost £6 worth of credit from my account! Last night I got a text from Orange saying that I was now down to 78p and I should top up again, bearing in mind that I'd done just that on Monday morning. I'd used my phone to text radio 1 yesterday morning, I'd text my hubby the day before but had free messages to use before midnight anyway and I'd rang him yesterday morning but he didn't answer and rang me back, so how the hell had I used over £9 worth of credit on ONE text message??
I've just got off the phone with Orange (after trying for the past 2 nights!) and apparently this 60044 number is some kind of games/ringtones company that charges 50p for each message they send and it had sent me 18 messages which I wasn't aware of because I'd blocked the number! Apparently the company responsible is called MIG, based in America. I was told to text the word STOP to the number given and then contact their customer services to sort it out. However, I've just text them and then received another message back asking me WHY I've cancelled it and I'm now down to 6p!!
I've tried ringing the customer services number, but surprise, surprise, the lines are all busy and I was placed in a queue! I wouldn't mind waiting if it was a UK number, but America??
How on earth did they get my number in the first place and how many other people have they fleeced out of this kind of money or even more??
